Chilly Saturday

Good evening, citizens of the world!

I am here to report about my day and to also rant about my feelings. Well, you know the drill. I am free to say whatever I want because this is my blog and not yours (the wise words of Katya and Trixie).

Anywho.

I tried Transjakarta all by myself for the first time today. I used traffi -- the app -- to figure out the routes for the bus to get me to Glodok because today is Chinese New Year. Well, I actually don't have any plan to feel, smell, breathe or experience anything CNY related today but then my friend -- Laras -- texted me and asked me to hang out, to which I said yes and ended up with a plan of going to Glodok instead.

The walk was quite exhausting but I was always quite the wanderer so I didn't mind. I went to the Rawa Barat Busway Station first to get into my destination (which I found out later that I should've gone to Polda Metro Jaya Station instead because it's actually way faster... I blame traffi for this). I must say that Rawa Barat is the most fascinating busway station I've ever stepped foot in so far. So the station is located above the street and there's some kind of secret stairs that could get you to the entrance of the station. It almost feels like Hogwarts for a second.

After topping up my BNI Tap Cash with the help of my best friend, Karina (virtually), I rode the bus. Oh, and also my shoes randomly broke during my walk to the Rawa Barat station, I dumped it to the trash as soon as I came home. The ride was quite exhausting and I stupidly stood in front of the doors and managed to get myself to get knocked by it when they're automatically opened. Lessons learned though, I will never stand in front of the door of a bus ever again.

2 stops later and I have arrived in the Blok M station where I am supposed to get from Platform 2 to Platform 1 to continue my journey to Glodok. The way to Platform 1 is not very safe. There is no sidewalk for the passengers to get into the platform, so yes that means we have to walk on the very road the buses are on, which is very dangerous. Then we get into this very dark and smelly tunnel, several staircases later I have arrived in Platform 2 of Blok M station.

There were a lot of people in Platform 2 already and I was so tired and I was sweating profusely because of the Jakarta heat. A few minutes later, the bus to Glodok arrived. I actually have no expectations with people riding Transjakarta, the majority of them are actually the poor so I did expect some bad manners, and that's exactly what I am getting. They were pushing each other, just rushing to get into the bus. Well, it's the 21 century and yes, we have evolved but we just can't get rid of that savagery in our DNA, I guess.

Trip to Glodok was fine. I stopped in a lot of stations (I think 17, to be exact) and the bus was quite full and I didn't get a seat, so it was quite exhausting at first because I had to stand. However, few stops later many people are getting off the bus so I managed to snatch myself a window seat -- which happens to be my favorite -- and enjoyed the view of Jakarta.

Finally, I have arrived in Glodok. My first destination was Petak Sembilan Market and boy I was confused. This is my first time stepping foot in Glodok too... so I relied on Google Maps heavily and just quietly praying that nobody will begal me on the way to the market. I arrived there and most of the shops are actually closed, but then I saw a lot of ruckus and crowds of people getting into this one place -- turned out to be a temple. I get in and boy.. it was a real live "Parasite" experience. While the rich Chinese-Buddhist people are praying, the poor are lining up waiting for them to finish praying in the hope of their kindness to give them some spares. It was quite a fascinating sight actually. So vivid, so truthful.

I enjoyed a lot of Chinese delicacies such as bakmi and hainan rice. I met new friends and talked a lot about relationships with Laras. I had a lot of fun and today was such a humbling experience. Been a while since I had tiny adventures like this, just discovering new parts of the city I lived in. I have missed this and I feel like my soul is replenished.

Happy Chinese New Year, everyone!
Get richer!!
